CHAÂPTÂÂERÂ 12
For over an hour Jessie wrestled with sleep. The guilt of having cheated at Tile Rummy was eating away her remaining peace of mind. After the fourth game, she had tied with Ryan, then she had won the tiebreaker. Ryan had held the family record for years but managed to accept defeat graciously. In reality he still held the record.
She wasnât sure how it happened; it went against everything she stood for. And the only way to get rid of the guilt was to tell Ryan. What was I thinking? I never cheat, at anything! She thought about how arrogant heâd been about his winning record. He had to be humbled, right? She sighed at her own justification. Look, Heavenly Father, Iâm sorry. The words were offered in silent prayer, but the next few came with more difficulty. I was being selfish. Heâs just so annoying sometimes. It was important to me to win, but . . . I know it was wrong. Jessie rolled over, thinking how, on an intellectual side of things, that prayer had been ridiculous. God already knew how she felt. Did she really have to verbalize everything? Her old ways were much easier, she decided. But what her âold waysâ were lacking was the peace the gospel had given her. And, if for no other reason, that one was strong enough to keep her trying even if she wasnât completely accustomed to her new ways yet.
She reached over to the nightstand and pulled out Rebeccaâs Book of Mormon from the top drawer. Sheâd read a few passages earlier that had moved her. She searched through the section called âMormonâ and reread verses eighteen through twenty-one from the ninth chapter.
And who shall say that Jesus Christ did not do many miracles? And there were many mighty miracles wrought by the hands of the apostles. And if there were miracles wrought then, why has God ceased to be a God of miracles and yet be an unchangeable Being? And behold, I say unto you he changeth not; if so he would cease to be God; and he ceaseth not to be God, and is a God of miracles. And the reason why he ceaseth to do miracles among the children of men is because that they dwindle in unbelief, and depart from the right way, and know not the God in whom they should trust. Behold, I say unto you that whoso believeth in Christ, doubting nothing, whatsoever he shall ask the Father in the name of Christ it shall be granted him; and this promise is unto all, even unto the ends of the earth.
She thought of the miracle she had received, when she was trying to understand how her mother could have left her and Katie at the theater. She would never have found her motherâs buried letter if God hadnât interceded. It was the Spirit whoâd told her to look under the lilac bushes of her old home. There she found the old ammo can of her fatherâs which had contained the letter.
